EMDR, developed by Francine Shapiro, PhD, is a method of psychotherapy that has been extensively researched and proven effective for treatment of trauma (www.emdria.org). EMDR treatment starts with history and the formulation of a "trauma map", then a process called preparation and resourcing, and then moves to trauma processing. During trauma processing, your therapist will ask you to focus on the disturbing material, while bilateral stimulation is applied, either with tones, taps, or eye movements. Your therapist will guide you through the processing. Your job is to report what you are experiencing along the way. You may feel a series of strong feelings and body sensations, or they may be mild, but the result will be a new sense of freedom from the past.

EMDR is intended to alleviate human suffering and is founded on the premise that each person has both innate tendency to move toward health and wholeness, and the inner capacity to achieve it.
