Recovery of Self Counseling
Kate Parkinson, M.A., LMFT, CSAT
Trauma- "The truth is that a child, as well as every other human being on the planet, has inherent worth.  It is not a quality that bears comparison.  It is an absolute value, and we all have it.  We differ from one another, but not in terms of inherent worth."  Pia Mellody
Childhood trauma, including child abuse and neglect, underlie most addictive and dysfunctional processes.   Recovery of Self Counseling utilizes two main methods for treating trauma:  Post Induction Therapy (PIT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).

PIT, a powerful therapeutic technique developed by Pia Mellody, Senior Clinical Advisor for The Meadows, assists clients in the following ways:

  • exploration of how family-of-origin issues impact development
  • identification of childhood traumas
  • understanding of core issues and the five secondary symptoms of developmental inmaturity
  • integration of the wounded child, adapted adult child, and the functional adult
  • feeling and carried shame reduction

EMDR, developed by Francine Shapiro, PhD, is a method of psychotherapy that has been extensively researched and proven effective for treatment of trauma (www.emdria.org).  EMDR treatment starts with history and the formulation of a "trauma map", then a process called preparation and resourcing, and then moves to trauma processing.  During trauma processing, your therapist will ask you to focus on the disturbing material, while bilateral stimulation is applied, either with tones, taps, or eye movements.  Your therapist will guide you through the processing.  Your job is to report what you are experiencing along the way.  You may feel a series of strong feelings and body sensations, or they may be mild, but the result will be a new sense of freedom from the past.

To watch videos of EMDR sessions go to (www.emdrinaction.com).

EMDR is intended to alleviate human suffering and is founded on the premise that each person has both innate tendency to move toward health and wholeness, and the inner capacity to achieve it.
