"Where there is breath,
there is hope."
Tonier Cain
Trauma is experienced when an event is so extraordinary that it overwhelms a person’s ability to cope and disconnects a person from themselves (their feelings, needs, desires, body sensations). Those experiences may include the diagnosis of cancer or other life threatening illness, violent crimes and car accidents. Likewise, trauma can be caused by stressors such as overt physical abuse, sexual abuse and emotional abuse as well as, more covert abuse such as neglect or deprivation of basic physical or emotional necessities (i.e. poverty or lack of human nurturing). Childhood trauma, including child abuse and neglect, underlie most addictive and dysfunctional processes. Dr. Gabor Maté asserts “Where there is addiction, there is trauma” and “Trauma is about the bad that happened as well as, the good that didn’t happen.”
